Lucca Weddings: Lucca is only 30Km from Pisa so it’s great for those couples that don’t want to wander to far from the airport and lots of people tend to stop there on there way to other parts of Tuscany and just can’t help falling in love with the place. It’s a beautiful walled city, which made its fortune with the silk trade. The ramparts are still in tact and you can hire bikes quite cheaply at various bike points around the city and cycle the whole way round or if you prefer a more sedate mode of transport you can walk around the walls dipping into the city through the various gates.
Lucca has everything you could possibly need, great shops, bars cafes and restaurants and some lovely hotels too suiting all budgets. Lots of culture and things to do, if your still feeling energetic after your bike tour round the city then you should climb the Torre dell’Ore, the clock tower which is situated in the heart of the city for spectacular views over the roof tops of Lucca and the surrounding area, go up on a clear day and you’ll see for miles. Also a must is a visit the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, which was once the site of a Roman Amphitheatre, now the buildings that surround the oval piazza are shops, bars and restaurants a great place to hang out and watch the world go by.
Most couples however chose to stay in the Lucchese hills, where vineyards are abundant and the villas are large and beautiful.
Weddings here take place in the Green room, La Sala Verde in the Palazzo Orsetti on:
Monday to Friday from 9.30 to 12.30 & from 15.00 to 18.30
Saturday morning from 9.00 to 12.00 and from 15.00 to 18.30
As Lucca town council also owns some rather wonderful villas for an extra cost it’s also possible to get married in one of these too, extra fees for the use of the villa may also apply, if your interested in these please drop me a line for more information.
Lucca is very much about music, Puccini was born here and you can visit his home, which is now a museum and every evening in the Basilica di San Giovanni there is a concert where some of his more famous arias are sung, http://www.puccinielasualucca.com/ for more info.
During the summer months there are full operas performed at Torre del Lago, which is close by http://www.puccinifestival.it/.
And in July the Summer Festival starts where there are open air music festivals in the piazza every night with headliners like Paulo Nutini, Simply Red, Dire Straits. Here’s the link http://www.puccinifestival.it/ As with most places in Tuscany Jazz is very big here too, so there really is something for everyone.
Barga is a beautiful little town just north of Lucca in the Garfagnana the most Scottish town in Italy, they even have a red telephone box!
When times were hard many Italians walked to Scotland and on making their money returned to their home town, and built lots of Liberty style villas. During August there is a “fish and chip festival”, if you live in Italy full time then a nice bit of battered cod is something that is high on the list of things I miss!
Many couples come to Barga to get married including lots of Scottish couples, weddings in Barga take place every day during office hours, the cost of the wedding in the town hall is €250 and they give the couple lots of gifts to remember their wedding day in Barga. It’s also possible to get married outside either on the mayor’s terrace, Marry Me In Tuscany held the first wedding to be held here and also in two locations close by which the town hall have granted licences too so your dream outdoor wedding is a possibility here.
And for Scottish couples I know a great bagpipe player you’re all set for the perfect wedding day!
With lovely bars for the aperitivo after the wedding and good local restaurants, places to stay and hold your wedding its a little gem that’s definitely worth having a look at.
